My Gramma stiffened it with sugar probably 40 yrs ago. The brittleness seems to have led to the breakage points. Not too bad, but I sure wish she hadn't stiffened it at all. I gently washed it with archival cleanser. It was still too stiff for my liking. The tip on framing and leaving air space is invaluable. I bought a piece of filet lace, already framed, that was very old and someone knew how to frame it correctly.
